It is important for children to come to school emotionally and physically healthy. Studies have shown that are
well-rested, well-nourished, and physically fit they are more ready to learn.
Every parent wants his or her child to be happy and healthy. Parents share the responsibility of ensuring their
child's well-being with teachers, the community, its members, and all its services. Learning the facts about
various health concerns is key to this common effort.
National and Wisconsin PTA is committed to building healthy families and healthy communities, and believes
we all have an important role to play in making sure parents, schools, and communities have the support and
resources they need.
With the passing of the Child Nutrition
and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004,
school districts participating in
federally subsidized child nutrition
programs (e.g., National School Lunch
Program, School Breakfast Program,
Special Milk Program and After School
Snack Program) will be required to
establish a local school wellness policy
by the beginning of the 2006-07
school year.
That means many changes regarding
snacks, meal choices and student
awareness are being made about
school environment issues that activity
practices.
The development in making these
policies needs to involve parents,
students, representatives of the school
food authority, the school board,
school administrators and the public.
Contact your school to see their policy
and how it can benefit your child.
