 School Wellness Policies
With the passing of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, school districts participating in federally subsidized child nutrition programs (e.g., National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Special Milk Program and After School Snack Program) will be required to establish a local school wellness policy by the beginning of the 2006-07 school year.
That means many changes regarding snacks, meal choices and student awareness are being made about school environment issues that influence students' eating and physical activity practices.
The development in making these policies needs to involve parents, students, representatives of the school food authority, the school board, school administrators and the public. Contact your school to see their policy and how it can benefit your child.
